Police Investigate Death Near Homeless Camp Thursday

Bloomington, Indiana – December 8, 2023

The Bloomington Police Department responded to a report of a potential fatality near Wheeler Mission, located in the 200 block of S Westplex Avenue, at approximately 5:40 p.m. on December 7th, according to BPD Capt. Ryan Pedigo. A man was soon found dead in a creek area, according to police radio traffic archived on OpenMHZ.com.

According to the police, a call notified officers of an unidentified man discovered in a wooded area adjacent to Wheeler Mission. Responding officers confirmed the individual was deceased upon arrival. The site of the discovery was near a homeless encampment situated within the wooded vicinity.

Law enforcement officials conducted interviews with several individuals present at the scene. Simultaneously, investigators thoroughly searched the area for any pertinent evidence about the circumstances of the man’s death.

As the investigation is ongoing, both the cause and manner of death remain under investigation. Authorities have announced plans for an autopsy to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the individual’s death.

The Monroe County Coroner’s Office is actively engaged in efforts to formally identify the deceased.
