Ducks Ltd. has announced their sophomore album, “Harm’s Way,” scheduled for release on February 9th, 2024, via Carpark Records. The Toronto duo has also shared their lead single and video, “Hollowed Out.”

Accompanying the announcement are their February Toronto (Record Release) and Montreal shows, with a performance in New York this weekend and another slated for London in May.

The album features the lead single “Hollowed Out,” a dynamic track laced with urgency, chiming melodies, and an undeniable catchiness. The single boasts backing vocals from Ratboys’ Julia Steiner and Marcus Nuccio (who also drums on the track), along with contributions from Dehd’s Jason Balla, Moontype’s Margaret McCarthy, and strings arranged and performed by Finom’s Macie Stewart.

Explaining the inspiration behind “Hollowed Out,” singer and lyricist Tom McGreevy revealed, “There was a sinkhole that opened up on Dundas West a little while ago, in an area near to where I live. It shut down the road for a month. It had a strange resonance, partly because a lot of the streets in Toronto used to be rivers and streams running down to the lake that roads were then built over. It felt like an encroachment of nature into an urban environment–the river coming back to collapse a piece of civic infrastructure, and I built the song around the feeling that evoked.”

The follow-up to their well-received 2021 debut, “Modern Fiction,” “Harm’s Way” was produced by Dave Vettraino (Dehd, Deeper, Lala Lala) and is now available for pre-order.

Their latest single, “Hollowed Out,” follows last month’s release of “The Main Thing,” which garnered attention from various press outlets including Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Paste, Consequence, and Under The Radar.

Ducks Ltd. specializes in inviting and frenetic guitar pop that resonates when life feels overwhelming. Although their songs carry a breezy tone, an underlying anxiety reflects deeper sentiments about everyday existence. “Harm’s Way” delves into interpersonal and societal collapses, urban decay, and the challenges of maintaining composure amidst chaos.

Despite its often-dark subject matter, “Harm’s Way” represents Ducks Ltd.’s most vividly rendered and collaborative collection yet. Composed on tour while supporting acts like Nation of Language, Illuminati Hotties, and Archers of Loaf, the album showcases the band’s refined songcraft and newfound confidence.

Moving away from their previous self-produced works, Ducks Ltd. sought to bring “Harm’s Way” to life in Chicago, collaborating with an array of talented musicians from the city to enrich their sound.

The band’s upcoming shows include a hometown record release show at Sonic Boom on February 8th, supported by Only God Forgives and Cootie Catcher, and an appearance at Montreal’s Taverne Tour Festival on February 10th. Additionally, they are set to perform this Saturday, December 2nd, at TV Eye in Ridgewood, Queens, alongside The Ophelias and Golden Apples. Ducks Ltd. will also take the stage in London, England, at the Moth Club on May 27th, 2024.
