Indiana University Hoosiers Prepare to Clash with North Alabama Lions in Men’s Basketball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University men’s basketball team is set to continue its 124th season with a showdown against North Alabama at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Dec. 21 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on BTN.

North Alabama (6-6) will rely on sophomore guard Jacari Lane, the reigning ASUN Freshman of the Year, to lead the charge. Lane averages 13.4 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. Senior guard KJ Johnson boasts a team-leading scoring average of 13.9 points per game, while senior forward Damian Forrest secures an impressive 8.5 rebounds per contest.

Guided by sixth-year head coach Tony Pujol, North Alabama made its first NCAA Division I postseason appearance in the CBI Tournament in 2014.

The Hoosiers and the Lions have crossed paths twice before, with Indiana claiming victory in both encounters, with scores of 91-65 (Nov. 12, 2019) and 87-52 (Dec. 13, 2020) in Bloomington. The last meeting saw freshman Trey Galloway contributing 11 points in 21 minutes off the bench, with Anthony Leal adding four points, three rebounds, and three assists in 14 minutes of play.

Indiana comes into this matchup having secured a hard-fought 69-68 victory over Morehead State on Dec. 19, fueled by a late 20-4 surge in the final minutes. Fifth-year senior forward Anthony Walker spearheaded the Hoosiers’ effort with 18 points and nine rebounds, while freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako added 13 points and seven boards. Senior guard Trey Galloway chipped in 14 points, including the crucial go-ahead three-pointer.

The team recently mourned the loss of Indiana University Athletics Hall of Famer George McGinnis (1950-2023). McGinnis, a revered figure, led the Big Ten in scoring (29.9 points per game) and rebounds (14.7) during his lone varsity season at Indiana. His contributions both on and off the court left an indelible mark on the basketball world.
