As the year 2023 draws to a close, Jeremy Hogan’s photographs encapsulate news events in Bloomington and surrounding areas over the past year.

It was nearly five years ago that the Bloomingtonian was founded at the end of January 2019 after some unfortunate business events that have affected local journalism.

“The business model of journalism has evolved drastically over the past two decades,” Hogan remarked, reflecting on the changing landscape. “However, one fundamental truth endures: compelling photographs don’t arise from behind desks. Crafting a compelling news image remains as challenging as ever.”

Hogan began his career freelancing for his local newspaper in Porterville, California when he was just 15. Sometimes he had to write the stories that went with his photos, and was initially self-taught by reading books about photography, and journalism. He graduated with a journalism degree before moving to Bloomington to work for the local paper. Before that, he worked on internships for several prestigious newspapers with national reputations for visual journalism further honing his skills.

Running the Bloomingtonian has taken Hogan back to his roots, when he freelanced for local newspapers in California, but there is no local newspaper to work for so he started this site.

This year’s collection of Hogan’s best photographs for The Bloomingtonian wouldn’t be possible without paid subscribers. Many hours went into making these photos, but they are impossible to make without community support.

Thank you!
