String of Crimes Targeting Bloomington’s Unhoused Community Reported to Police

Staff report

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A series of crimes targeting individuals without housing has been reported in Bloomington from December 21 to December 23, 2023, according to daily police summaries. The reports are notable because most crimes against people without housing go unreported.

The Bloomington Police Department logged several incidents during this time, underscoring the susceptibility of those living on the streets or in temporary shelters.

The incidents reported are as follows:

One incident detailed an unknown person stealing unidentified items from a shopping cart left unattended by another person without housing outside the Shalom Community Center. The case remains inactive.

Another report documented a residence being ransacked at Wheeler Mission, with personal documents taken by an unidentified perpetrator.

Also at Wheeler Mission Ministries, another individual reported the theft of cash and clothing by an unknown person.

The most recent incident occurred when two known individuals took money left on a picnic table at Switchyard Park by a 31-year-old man without a home.

These occurrences highlight the vulnerability of individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, making them targets of theft and property-related offenses.
