Clay County, Indiana — The Clay County Coroner’s Office has officially identified the individual involved in the pedestrian accident on Interstate 70 at the 22-mile marker westbound as Fredy Romas Escobar, a 33-year-old resident of Kansas City, Kansas.
The incident occurred on December 25, 2023, at approximately 8:15 p.m., prompting a response from the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department after reports of a pedestrian being struck on Interstate 70 westbound near the 22-mile marker.
Initial reports indicated that an individual was walking in the passing lane of Interstate 70 westbound when struck by a passenger vehicle. Trooper Athan Lamson, conducting the preliminary investigation, revealed that the driver of the vehicle promptly pulled over and immediately alerted emergency services. There were no other reported injuries in the incident.
Upon responding to the scene, the Clay County Coroner’s Office engaged in the investigation and facilitated the recovery of the deceased.
Positive identification of the victim was subsequently confirmed as Fredy Romas Escobar from Kansas City, Kansas.
Assisting agencies, including Troopers from the Putnamville State Police Post, Clay County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department, Posey Volunteer Fire Department, and the Clay County Coroner’s Office, collaborated in managing the aftermath of this tragic event.
