ISP Investigating Inmate Death in Orange County

PAOLI, Ind. — January 1, 2024

The Indiana State Police (ISP) are conducting an investigation into the death of an inmate at Orange County Jail, as confirmed by Sergeant Detective Brock Werne.

On Saturday, December 30th, 2023, Jail officers from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office discovered 54-year-old Jeanne Ross, a resident of Mooresville, IN, unresponsive in her cell around 5:00 a.m. They immediately administered medical aid and called for Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Despite their efforts, Ross was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

Ross had been transferred from Hendricks County Jail to Orange County Jail on December 26th, 2023, due to a warrant for failure to appear.

Upon the Orange County Sheriff’s Office’s request, the Indiana State Police have taken over the investigation.

An autopsy was conducted by the Orange County Coroner’s Office on Sunday morning, but the official cause of death and toxicology reports are pending.

The Orange County Coroner’s Office assisted the Indiana State Police in this investigation according to the ISP.
