Indiana Men’s Basketball Set to Face Minnesota Golden Gophers in Men’s Basketball Clash Friday

Written from press release

Bloomington, Ind. – January 12, 2024

Indiana University’s men’s basketball team is gearing up for a showdown in its 124th season as they prepare to host the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a two-game homestand. The opening tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 12, at the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, and the game will be broadcasted on FS1.

The Golden Gophers (12-3, 3-1) are riding a wave with a seven-game winning streak, including key victories over Nebraska, Michigan, and Maryland in league matchups. Led by junior forward Dawson Garcia’s impressive averages of 16.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, the Gophers boast a well-rounded lineup with significant contributions from players like Mike Mitchell Jr., Joshua Ola-Joseph, and freshman guard Cam Christie.

In preparation for this matchup, the Hoosiers are looking to build on their dominant series history against the Golden Gophers. Indiana holds a commanding lead in the series, leading 107-69, and has secured victories in eight of the last nine encounters. The Hoosiers have been particularly formidable in Bloomington, claiming victory in the last seven games played on their home court.

The last meeting between the two teams took place on Jan. 25, 2023, where Indiana emerged victorious with a final score of 61-57. Trayce Jackson-Davis delivered a standout performance, securing 25 points, 21 rebounds, and six blocks, showcasing a level of skill not seen since D.J. White’s performance in 2008.

Indiana is coming off a setback at Rutgers on Jan. 9, where sophomore center Kel’el Ware displayed resilience with 13 points, a career-high 17 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Ware, a transfer from Oregon, has undergone a significant transformation in his second season, leading the Hoosiers in rebounds and blocks.

Freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako has been a key contributor, leading the team in 3-pointers this season. With 20 successful shots from beyond the arc, Mgbako has been a consistent scorer, averaging 9.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.

As the Hoosiers look to bounce back from their recent setback, fans are eager to witness the team’s performance against the formidable Golden Gophers. The game is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. ET, with FS1 providing televised coverage and IU Radio Network delivering the action on the airwaves.
