Indiana State Police Arrest Southern Indiana Contractor for Theft

Staff report

Sellersburg, IN – January 11, 2024

The Indiana State Police in Sellersburg apprehended a heating and air contractor on charges of theft, stemming from an investigation initiated in December.

Detective Travis Baker launched the investigation after a homeowner filed a complaint against 49-year-old John Aaron McKinley of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, and owner of McKinley Heating and Air. The homeowner alleged she paid McKinley over $10,000 to repair her heating and air-conditioning system. During the inquiry, Detective Baker found that McKinley had advised the homeowner to replace the entire HVAC system. McKinley received payment but failed to return to complete the promised work. The homeowners, left with an incomplete system, resorted to temporarily heating their house with a wood stove, expecting the repairs to be finished before the onset of cold temperatures.

The investigative process involved interviews and a scrutiny of relevant bank transactions. Detective Baker compiled all gathered information and forwarded it to the Washington County Prosecutor’s office for assessment and potential charges.

On January 10, 2024, the Washington County Circuit Court issued an arrest warrant for John McKinley, charging him with Theft, classified as a level 6 felony. Without incident, troopers located and apprehended McKinley, transporting him to the Washington County Jail.
