Indiana University Men’s Basketball to face Wisconsin Friday in Madison

The Indiana University men’s basketball team embarks on a crucial two-game road trip, commencing on Friday, Jan. 19, at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The Hoosiers (Record) are set to tip off against the No. 11/8 Wisconsin Badgers (13-4, 5-1) at 7:30 p.m. CT, with the game broadcast on FS1.

The Big Ten-leading Badgers, paced by sophomore guard AJ Storr’s impressive 15.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, present a formidable challenge for the Hoosiers. Storr, a St. John’s transfer, also ranks second on the team with 20 made 3-pointers.

Frontcourt contributors Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl, averaging 12.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 11.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, respectively, bolster the Wisconsin lineup. The trio of Max Klesmit, John Blackwell, and Chucky Hepburn, combining for 54 made 3-pointers, adds depth to the Badgers’ offensive arsenal.

Indiana holds a historical advantage in the series against Wisconsin, leading 97-80. The rivalry dates back to Jan. 19, 1910, with IU securing a 13-11 victory in Madison. In the last meeting on Jan. 14, 2023, Indiana emerged victorious with a 63-45 score at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

All-American forward Trayce Jackson-Davis played a pivotal role in the previous encounter, scoring 18 points, securing 12 rebounds, and contributing five blocked shots. Indiana aims to secure its first victory at the Kohl Center since Jan. 25, 1998, and break a 12-game road losing streak against ranked Wisconsin teams.

Last Outing:

Indiana faced a setback in its last game against archrival Purdue, succumbing to an 87-66 defeat. The No. 2/2 Boilermakers, led by Zach Edey’s 33 points and 14 rebounds, proved too strong for the Hoosiers.

Senior guard Trey Galloway led the Hoosier offense with 17 points and five assists, while freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako contributed 15 points despite early foul trouble. The IU bench, led by sophomore guard CJ Gunn, outscored Purdue’s reserves 16-10.

Player Spotlight: Malik Reneau and Mackenzie Mgbako:

Sophomore forward Malik Reneau has been a consistent performer, posting double digits in scoring in 16 games this season, including a career-high 34 points against Kennesaw State. Freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako leads the team in 3-pointers, with 24 this season, and has been a key contributor in recent games.

Reneau is averaging 15.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 0.8 blocks per game. Mgbako, a top-10 recruit, averages 11.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in Big Ten play.
