Paragon fire leaves one dead Sunday

PARAGON, Ind. — A residence fire in the 200 block of Arthur Road, southwest of Paragon left one person dead on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

At 08:20 A.M, Morgan County Public Safety Dispatch received a call reporting a residence fire with possible entrapment. MFD Engine 141, Chief 1401, Chief 1402, Fire Marshal 1409, and personnel from several neighboring fire departments responded to the scene to assist Paragon Volunteer Fire Company.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a “fully involved” log cabin-type home, which had partially collapsed into the basement. It took two hours to bring the fire under control.

A body was later discovered in the burnt structure by fire investigators from MFD, Washington Twp., and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, in collaboration with Detectives from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. The Morgan County Coroner’s office was notified.

An occupant who managed to escape the burning structure was transported by Morgan County EMS to a local area hospital, where they are being treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
