Electric Bicycle and Scooter Thefts at IU Since January 16, 2024

The following is a summary of the Crime Notice sent Thursday by Indiana University following the thefts of multiple electric bicycle and scooter thefts on campus:

CRIME NOTICE: REPORTED ELECTRIC BICYCLE AND SCOOTER THEFTS – “MOTOR VEHICLE THEFTS”

IU Bloomington Crime Notice: February 1, 2024

In accordance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) issues a crime notice regarding completed motor vehicle thefts.

REPORTED OFFENSES: On January 16, 29, 30, and 31, IUPD received reports of completed electric bicycle and scooter thefts, classified as motor vehicle thefts (MVT) under state and federal regulations. The suspect(s) targeted locked electric bicycles or scooters, with two incidents occurring within an hour of parking.

TIME AND LOCATION OF OFFENSES:

  • January 16, 2024, Teter – Thompson South Bike Rack
  • January 26, 2024, Willkie North Bike Rack
  • January 29, 2024, Ballantine Hall Bike Rack
  • January 31, 2024, Cedar Hall Southwest Bike Rack

SUSPECT: The only case with possible suspect information is the January 26 incident. A white male with curly blonde hair, donning a black jacket and a leg brace over khaki pants, was observed entering Willkie Hall with a scooter resembling the stolen one.

SAFETY TIPS: To enhance personal and community safety, consider the following precautions:

  • Record the make, model, and serial number of your electric bicycle or scooter, storing it securely.
  • Employ at least one U-style lock to secure your electric bicycle or scooter.
  • Lock both wheels and the frame to the bike rack, and remove the seat.
  • Choose well-lit areas for parking your electric bicycle or scooter on a bike rack.
  • Report any suspicious individuals near bicycle racks to the police.
