Portland, OR – February 6, 2024 — Blitzen Trapper, the revered psych-rock outfit hailing from Portland, has set the music world abuzz with the announcement of their upcoming album, “100’s of 1000’s, Millions of Billions,” scheduled to hit the shelves on May 17, 2024. The album, comprising 12 tracks, marks a return to the band’s roots, blending classic songwriting with a psychedelic twist and is expected to be a milestone in their nearly two-decade-long career.
Produced by the band’s lead singer and songwriter, Eric Earley, the album was recorded by guitarist Nathan Vanderpool at his rural Washington studio. The project boasts backing vocals by Eric D. Johnson and Anna Tivel on the track “Planetarium,” with Tivel also contributing violin and vocals throughout the album. The cover artwork, an abstract collage by Robert Pollard, adds an artistic dimension to the release.
Fans can now pre-order “100’s of 1000’s, Millions of Billions” to ensure they get their hands on the mesmerizing collection that promises a unique blend of lo-fi intimacy and trippy psychedelia.
The lead single, “Cosmic Backseat Education,” has been shared along with an eccentric puppet-starring music video directed by Mychal Sargent. Earley shares insights into the song’s inspiration, revealing childhood memories of lying in the backseat of his parents’ car, absorbing knowledge from the radio. The single, with its ruminative yet urgent vibe, sets the stage for the album’s exploration of purpose and joy through music.
Blitzen Trapper will kick off their U.S. tour in support of the album with shows at Portland’s Aladdin Theatre and Seattle’s Tractor Tavern on May 17th and 18th, respectively. The tour will culminate with a performance at the Meadowgrass Music Festival on May 25th.
The album, inspired by Earley’s fascination with Buddhist texts and meditation, explores themes of rebirth, transcendence, and the circularity of existence. Blending sincerity with surrealism, the songs unfold as a riddle-filled journey that poses questions without providing answers. The production, described as intoxicating, merges analog and electronic sounds into a lush sonic landscape.
Earley explains the genesis of the project, stating, “This whole project grew out of a box of old four-track tapes from the ’90s that I found recently.” The album captures the essence of his musical beginnings and combines it with newfound perspectives gained through his exploration of Buddhism and meditation.
“100’s of 1000’s, Millions of Billions” track listing includes notable titles such as “Cosmic Backseat Education,” “Cheap Fantastical Takedown,” and “View from Jackson Hill.” The album promises to be a sprawling collection, encapsulating a poignant, expansive exploration of perception and purpose.
Blitzen Trapper invites music enthusiasts to join them on this introspective and musically rich journey, with tour dates and tickets available for purchase starting this Friday. For more information and updates, visit Blitzen Trapper’s Official Website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
