BLOOMINGTON, IN – February 11, 2024

Firefighters responded to a structure fire on W Allen Street this Sunday evening, with the City of Bloomington Fire Department taking the lead. The incident was originally dispatched as a possible city address, but the fire was in the county.

As units were en route to the scene, dispatch corrected the location to be in the county instead. In response, the City of Bloomington Fire Department coordinated with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and dispatched units from the Monroe County and Ellettsville Fire Departments.

Upon arrival, City Engine 4 reported a two-story detached garage ablaze near a residential home. The fire attack began immediately, and additional units secured a water supply while providing extra firefighters. The collaborative efforts of the responding crews swiftly contained the fire, preventing its spread to the nearby house.

The homeowner, who was present at the time of the incident, was alerted to the fire by their grandchild. The child noticed smoke billowing behind the house. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Department assisted with traffic management as supply hoses were laid across the road. Additionally, IU Health Lifeline provided medical standby support during the firefighting efforts.

While still on scene, City of Bloomington, Monroe County, and Ellettsville units were redirected to a second call on the far North side at N Turkey Track Rd. The reported structure fire turned out to be a false alarm, with smoke emanating from an outdoor furnace. All units were disregarded, and normal service resumed.
