Hoosier Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against Fighting Illini in 86-66 Loss

CHAMPAIGN, IL – February 19, 2023

In a match-up at the State Farm Center, the Indiana Hoosiers fell to the Illinois Fighting Illini 86-66 defeat on Monday afternoon.

The Hoosiers struggled to maintain momentum, facing a relentless Illinois team throughout the four quarters.

The first quarter saw both teams in a closely contested battle, with Indiana securing a narrow 17-18 lead. However, the Fighting Illini outscored the Hoosiers 26-11 in the second quarter establishing a commanding lead.

The third quarter saw a resurgence from Indiana, putting up 19 points to Illinois’ 17, but the Fighting Illini maintained their advantage. The final quarter sealed the fate of the game, with Illinois extending their lead.

Kendall Bostic led the charge for the Fighting Illini with a double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Makira Cook contributed for Illinois with 22 points, while Genesis Bryant added 15 points to the scoreboard.

IU’s Mackenzie Holmes showcased led her team with 24 points, followed by Yarden Garzon with 17 points.

Turnovers proved to be a significant factor in the game, with Indiana committing 9 compared to Illinois’ 16. The Fighting Illini also dominated in the paint, securing 42 points compared to Indiana’s 36.

The defeat leaves Indiana with a season record of 21-4 (12-3), while Illinois improves to 13-12 (7-8).
