Woman dies after being struck by a vehicle at Ind. 37 and Dillman Road Tuesday morning; Hit and run suspect arrested

Bloomington, Indiana – February 20, 2024

A fatal vehicle collision with a pedestrian occurred early this morning at the intersection of S. State Highway 37 and Dillman Road, leaving a 48-year-old female victim deceased. The Monroe County Coroner, Joani Stalcup, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are actively investigating the incident.

A 38-year-old suspect was arrested and was preliminarily charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, according to the MCSO.

“The Monroe County Coroner along with Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is actively working a fatal pedestrian struck by a vehicle that occurred this morning, 2/20/2024 at approximately 0643a, at the intersection of S. State Highway 37 and Dillman Road. The victim is a 48 year old female however the identity of the female is being withheld until proper notification has been made to her family. An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday, 2/22/24, in Terre Haute,” according to Monroe County Coroner Joani Stalcup.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office posted the following on its Facebook page Tuesday, “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 02/20/2024 At approximately 6:40 am on February 20, 2024, Central Dispatch received a call of a person wearing dark clothing walking southbound in the northbound lane of South State Road 37 near Dillman Road, in Bloomington, IN. Approximately 3 minutes later, several callers reported the individual had been hit, but they had not witnessed the accident. Deputies and EMT personnel were dispatched to the area and arrived to find a female lying in the roadway deceased. Our crash reconstructionist and detectives were called to the scene. The investigation led detectives to 38-year-old Dustin Eason, of Bloomington, IN. Mr. Eason was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for a blood draw then booked into the Monroe County Jail on the charges of: Leaving the Scene of an Accident resulting in death, a Level 4 felony. Identification of the deceased is pending notification of next of kin. Charges listed are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.”
