Bonny Light Horseman Signs to Bloomington Based Jagjaguwar, Releases Debut Single “When I Was Younger”

Written from press release

New York, NY – February 21, 2024

Bonny Light Horseman, the trio comprising Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman, has officially joined the Jagjaguwar, marking a milestone in their musical journey. Simultaneously, the group has unveiled their inaugural single under the label, “When I Was Younger,” along with an accompanying music video.

The song, produced by Kaufman and recorded at the historic Levis Corner House in Ballydehob, County Cork, captures the essence of domestic struggles and societal unspoken truths. The accompanying video, shot by Jason Lee, Donal Scannell, and Colm Rooney, was filmed on location, adding authenticity to the raw emotions embedded in the track.

Bonny Light Horseman has also announced an extensive headlining U.S. tour, featuring two nights at the iconic Music Hall of Williamsburg in New York City. The tour includes appearances at major summer festivals such as Bonnaroo Music & Arts, Red Wing Roots, and more. Tickets for the tour go on sale on February 23rd at 10 am local time.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind “When I Was Younger,” the band stated, “There’s a whole genre of trad songs with this ‘domestic frustration’ sentiment, like ‘Single Girl Married Girl,’ ‘Wish I Was A Single Girl Again,’ etc. This song is inspired by those, but we wanted to write it as a duet, to tell two sides of a story.”

The live recording of the song captures the ambient sounds of the century-old Irish pub, including the audience’s wordless wail in the middle, creating a collective, primal experience.

Bonny Light Horseman’s members, Mitchell, Johnson, and Kaufman, boast an impressive collective resume, each bringing unique talents and experiences to the table. Mitchell, celebrated for her solo work and as the mind behind the hit Broadway musical Hadestown, has received multiple Tony Awards and a Grammy. Johnson is known for his work with Fruit Bats, collaborations with The Shins, and film score compositions. Kaufman, a multi-talented songwriter, producer, and musician, has collaborated with a diverse range of artists.

As Bonny Light Horseman gears up for a new album, their debut self-titled album earned them a GRAMMY nomination for Best Folk Album. The track “Deep in Love” also received a nomination for Best American Roots Performance.

The tour dates, starting in June and extending into August, promise an immersive experience for fans, featuring collaborations with Alpha Consumer and Bridget St John at select venues.
