Indianapolis Man Driving Without a Tire Arrested for OWI

Fountain County, IN – March 1, 2024

An Indianapolis man was arrested on multiple charges, including Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (OWI), after being caught driving a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix without one of its tires, according to the Indiana State Police.

Wednesday afternoon, at 2:30 p.m., Trooper Millburg, patrolling Interstate 74 near the 20-mile marker, spotted the unusual sight of a Pontiac Grand Prix traveling eastbound, conspicuously missing one of its tires and grinding along on the rim. The trooper initiated a traffic stop, citing speeding and a registration violation as the primary reasons.

The driver, later identified as 39-year-old Anthony Hayes from Indianapolis, IN, was questioned by Trooper Millburg. During the interaction, the trooper noticed signs suggesting potential criminal activity and detected the distinct odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

Upon conducting a search of the Pontiac, Trooper Millburg discovered suspected marijuana. Additionally, the trooper gathered evidence indicating that Hayes was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Hayes was taken into custody and subsequently transported to the Fountain County Jail.

Charges include:

  • Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated – Endangerment – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Driving While Suspended – Prior – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Possession of Marijuana – Class B Misdemeanor
  • Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated – Class B Misdemeanor

Trooper Millburg received assistance from fellow troopers from the Lafayette Post and the Fountain County Sheriff’s Office during the arrest and processing of the incident.
