Mayor Thomson Names Kerr as Permanent Fire Chief of Bloomington, Indiana

Bloomington, Ind. – March 6, 2024

Mayor Kerry Thomson announced Wednesday the appointment of Roger Kerr as the Chief of the Bloomington Fire Department, according to the press release from the City of Bloomington.

Kerr has been serving as the interim chief since the beginning of the Thomson administration on January 1, 2024.

“Without a doubt, Roger Kerr is the best person to lead the Bloomington Fire Department forward,” Mayor Thomson said. “He has earned the trust and respect of his colleagues. He brings the experience of a career firefighter who has worked his way up the ranks. And, he has the skills and heart of a leader and a public servant.”

Roger Kerr, a veteran of the Bloomington Fire Department since 1988, previously held the position of chief from 2008 to 2014. Throughout his career, he has served in various capacities, including battalion chief, captain, engineer, aerial technician, and firefighter.

Kerr will officially retire as a career firefighter on March 11 and will assume the role of the appointed fire chief as a civilian on March 12.
