Chicago Man Arrested After High-Speed Pursuit in Vermillion County; Speeds of 130mph

Greencastle, IN – March 8, 2024

Indiana State Police, Putnamville District, reports the arrest of a Chicago man following a high-speed vehicle pursuit on March 7, 2024, in Vermillion County, according to the Indiana State Police.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., Master Trooper Chuck Murphy observed a black Chevy Cruze traveling southbound on State Road 63 near County Road 50 North, exceeding the speed limit. Activating radar, Master Trooper Murphy recorded a speed of 95 mph in a 60-mph zone. Pursuing the vehicle in his fully marked police car, Murphy initiated a traffic stop near County Road 150 South.

The Cruze initially complied, coming to a stop; however, as Master Trooper Murphy approached the vehicle, it suddenly accelerated, leading to a pursuit. The pursued vehicle, reaching speeds of 130 mph, traveled northbound on State Road 63, cut through the median, and reversed direction, heading southbound near County Road 1550 North. The chase concluded when the Cruze experienced mechanical issues, prompting a controlled stop.

Following the stop, Master Trooper Murphy, along with deputies from the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department, conducted a felony traffic stop, apprehending the driver and passengers without incident.

The arrested driver, identified as Justyn Culotta, 25, of Chicago, Illinois, was taken into custody and transported to the Vermillion County Jail. Culotta now faces charges including Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle (Level 6 Felony), Reckless Driving (Class A Misdemeanor), and Operator Never Licensed (Class A Misdemeanor).

Additionally, passengers in the Cruze were detained by the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department for possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Assisting in the operation was the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department.

All criminal defendants, including Justyn Culotta, are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
