Human Skeletal Remains Discovered Near Monroe County Airport

Staff report

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has initiated a comprehensive investigation in response to the discovery of human skeletal remains in a wooded area near the Monroe County Airport on March 2nd, 2024, according to a press release from the MCSO. The finding, made by a hiker, has prompted local authorities to collaborate in efforts to identify the individual and shed light on the circumstances surrounding the remains.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Detectives, working in conjunction with the Monroe County Coroner’s Office and an anthropology team from the University of Indianapolis, are actively engaged in the investigation. Their primary focus is on establishing the identity of the deceased individual. As of now, detectives have uncovered evidence suggesting that foul play is not a factor in this case. Consequently, attention is being directed towards reviewing missing person reports from the past year in hopes of generating leads that may aid in the identification process.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information relevant to the ongoing investigation to come forward. Individuals who may have details or leads are encouraged to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at (812) 349-2727.
