Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was the place to be on Monday evening as the #4-Seeded Indiana Hoosiers danced into the Sweet Sixteen of the 2024 NCAA Basketball Tournament, in front of a crowd of 12,385.

The #5Seeded Oklahoma Sooners came ready to play this Hoosier team. They demonstrated fantastic ball movement in the opening quarter, forcing a back-and-forth game. They worked the ball inside exceptionally well, and shot nearly 50% from the field.

By contrast, Indiana started off shooting just 35%. All-American Forward Mackenzie Holmes and Sydney Parrish led the Cream & Crimson with 8 apiece. The first quarter ended 19-19.

In quarter 2, Indiana looked frustrated with missed shots and some missed opportunities for open cuts. There seemed to be some confusion on the offensive side of the court, and IU was having continued problems scoring. With 4 minutes left in the half, only 3 Hoosiers had found the bottom of the net.

A Sara Scalia three-pointer coupled with Parrish taking a charge on the backcourt with a minute remaining in the half would energize Hoosier Nation, but the Sooners headed into the locker room with 30-29 advantage in this win or go home battle.

IU was held to 29% shooting, missing 23 of their 34 shots, many from inside the paint.

Fans were disappointed during the break, left to question whether their Hoosiers would be able to figure it all out and return for the second half much like they did on Saturday afternoon, and outclass Oklahoma in the third quarter. But, starting off the 3rd quarter, Indiana did not look like they were in much more sync than their first half, and Oklahoma found their shooting rhythm. The Sooners then knocked down 3 consecutive triples to go up by 7 points.

The game was beginning to look as if it was getting away from the Hoosiers, and Head Coach Teri Moren called a timeout.

Indiana came out strong to start the 4th quarter, seemingly knowing that they had 10 minutes to sustain their season and the careers of their seniors. Holmes responded to a defensive stop with a strong layup under pressure. But Oklahoma would continue to match the Hoosiers with strong offensive play.

The game continued to teeter totter, but Indiana found their first lead in a while with a fast break led by Sophomore Guard Yarden Garzon, capped with a finish by Scalia. Scalia had struggled throughout the game to get open, while the Sooners played her extremely tight all evening. They were determined to not let her have the same kind of numbers she put up against Fairfield on Saturday.

But the balance attack of Indiana shone through, as Holmes would step to the plate with a dozen points in the final quarter, including a pair from the charity stripe.

The entire Hall was on the edge of their seats as Holmes sank the front end of her 2 free-throws, and then tied it at 64 with the back end.

Indiana would then put together a pair of defensive stops. An IU basket coupled with one more stop on D gave Indiana the ball, up two, with 1:04 left to play.

Hoosier Nation was deafening with 25 seconds to go after Holmes stole the ball, got it in the hands of Scalia, whole subsequently sank both from the stripe after being fouled.

The Sooners would continue to threaten, but Indiana was able to put this one in the win column, successfully defending Assembly Hall throughout the entire season without a home loss. The big win would also mean that Holmes could continue the tradition she started in 2022.

After the teams shook hands and met in the team huddle, she led the charge, sprinting into the student section with her teammates, high fiving and fist bumping Hoosier Nation along the way.

Next up, Indiana will head to Albany and face the undefeated, overall #1 Seeded South Carolina on Friday evening.
