AT&T to Deliver Fiber-Powered Broadband Access to More Than 530 Customer Locations in Lawrence County

Written from press release:

Lawrence County, Ind., March 28, 2024 – AT&T has announced a significant partnership with Lawrence County to enhance broadband access in rural areas. The collaboration, valued at nearly $2.6 million, aims to extend AT&T Fiber services to over 530 customer locations, marking a pivotal step in narrowing the digital divide prevalent in the region.

Under the terms of the agreement, AT&T will allocate more than $1.6 million towards the project, while Lawrence County will contribute $950,000. The initiative targets residential and business addresses in the rural expanse of west central Lawrence County, with the objective of delivering high-speed internet connectivity to underserved communities.

Rodney Fish, Lawrence County Commissioner, expressed enthusiasm for the endeavor, highlighting the critical importance of robust connectivity in modern daily life. Fish emphasized AT&T’s reliability as a provider and anticipated the tangible benefits the expansion would bring to rural residents and businesses.

Preparatory work, including meticulous planning and engineering assessments, is slated to commence in the second quarter of 2024. The network deployment is anticipated to span a two-year period, following the formalization of the final agreement between county officials and AT&T, which was concluded recently.

Bill Soards, President of AT&T Indiana, conveyed gratitude for the ongoing collaboration with Lawrence County, affirming the company’s commitment to bolstering broadband infrastructure across Indiana. Soards reiterated AT&T’s dedication to bridging the connectivity gap, citing ongoing and forthcoming projects aimed at facilitating high-speed internet access in both rural and urban locales.

This initiative marks the third public-private partnership between AT&T and Lawrence County within the past year, following earlier projects aimed at extending fiber-optic services to thousands of customer locations. Additionally, AT&T’s participation in the State of Indiana’s Next Level Connections broadband grant program underscores its broader commitment to fostering digital inclusion statewide.

The deployment of AT&T Fiber promises residents and businesses access to superfast internet, capable of delivering speeds of up to 5-Gig with symmetrical upload and download speeds. The enhanced bandwidth and reliability of the network are poised to facilitate seamless multitasking, multimedia streaming, social media engagement, and gaming experiences.

AT&T’s extensive experience in fiber-optic deployment across Indiana underscores its capacity to deliver reliable, high-speed connectivity. The company’s ongoing efforts align with its broader mission to expand network coverage and enhance connectivity for communities across the United States.
