PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS,  the City of Bloomington recognizes people of all abilities to be an important and valuable part of our rich diversity; and

WHEREAS,  the City of Bloomington also recognizes the distinct talents and experiences those with disabilities offer to our community; and

WHEREAS,  the City of Bloomington reaffirms its commitment to creating environments, policies, and systems that welcome and support all community members, including those who live with disabilities; and

WHEREAS,  we must acknowledge as a community that there are systemic barriers that preclude those with disabilities from enjoying equitable experiences and living independent lives within their community; and

WHEREAS,  dismantling these barriers in order to create equitable, inclusive environments for all is a responsibility everyone shares; and

WHEREAS, each Bloomington resident should do their part to: Recognize the valued experiences and contributions those with disabilities add to our community. Understand the barriers and the financial, economic, spiritual, and community losses we experience when systemic barriers prevent contributions from those with disabilities. Find solutions to include everyone in all aspects of community life. Encourage the development of equitable policies and systems for everyone.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kerry Thomson, Mayor of the City of Bloomington, do hereby proclaim March 26, 2024, as Disability Awareness Day in Bloomington.
