Protesters Detained During Congressional Candidate’s Speech at Indiana University

Staff report

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — April 1, 2024

At least two protesters were detained and led away in handcuffs as U.S. Rep. Jim Banks, a candidate for U.S. Senate, and Chaya Raichik from Libs of Tik Tok (who purportedly has millions of followers online) spoke at the Oak room in the Indiana Memorial Union on April 1, 2024, at Indiana University in Bloomington.

The detainees were reportedly chanting before authorities removed them, according to a witness who confirmed details with the Bloomingtonian after the event. According to an IU spokesperson, it remains unclear whether they will face charges, as the decision lies with the Monroe County prosecutor’s office.

The event, which required an RSVP, welcomed media coverage without obstruction.

Approximately two dozen predominantly male individuals occupied the front rows, while a group opposing Raichik’s ideology and disagreeing with Banks filled a row of chairs at the rear.

Banks voiced opposition to teaching political views in schools that parents might not endorse, asserting that children lack the freedom to choose between political perspectives. He engaged in discussions with some protesters regarding the essence of free speech. Meanwhile, Raichik is an advocate of banning books in schools, which she labeled, “pornographic,” due to discussions of LGBTQ issues.

Raichik attempted to elucidate the concept of “woke,” defining it as “the distraction of normality,” to which Banks added, “It’s also anti-Americanism.”

During the discourse, Raichik remarked, “DI is just code for less white.”

Partial video footage of the discussion is available here:

More about Raichik:

Libs of TikTok is a handle for various far-right[a] and anti-LGBT[b] social-media accounts operated by Chaya Raichik (/ˈxɑːjə ˈraɪtʃɪk/ KHAH-yə RY-chik),[10] a former real estate agent.[11][12][13] Raichik uses the accounts to repost content created by left-wing and LGBT people on TikTok, and on other social-media platforms, often with hostile, mocking, or derogatory commentary.[14][15] The accounts promote hate speech and transphobia, and spread false claims, especially relating to medical care of transgender children.[16][14][17][18] The Twitter account, also known by the handle @LibsofTikTok, has nearly 3 million followers as of February 2024[19][20] and has become influential among American conservatives and the political right.[12][15][21] Libs of TikTok’s social-media accounts have received several temporary suspensions and a permanent suspension from TikTok.[22][23][24][25]” – Wikipedia
