1,258 Inmate Deaths Reported in Indiana Prisons Between 2001 and 2019

Written from press release

INDIANAPOLIS — Between 2001 and 2019, a total of 1,258 inmates have died in Indiana’s prisons, according to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

The leading causes of death within these facilities are cancer and heart disease, the study reveals.

The findings, released by personal injury lawyers Connecticut Trial Firm, shed light on the mortality rates within Indiana’s prison system. The analysis utilized data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics to determine both the total number of deaths and the leading causes of death.

During the examined period, cancer and heart disease claimed the lives of 336 inmates each in Indiana’s prisons. Additionally, the state experienced an average of 20.6 deaths annually within its local jails.

Suicide emerged as the leading cause of unnatural deaths among inmates across the state, with 87 reported cases.

The study also provided insights into national trends, revealing that men constitute 95.9% of prison deaths compared to only 4% for women. Furthermore, individuals aged 55 and older were found to be the most susceptible to mortality, with approximately 1,739 deaths occurring annually in this age group.

In a state ranking of prison mortality rates, Louisiana topped the list with 42.7 deaths per 100,000 people, while Indiana ranked twenty-second with 18.3 deaths per 100,000 people.

Ryan Keen from Connecticut Trial Firm emphasized the significance of examining prison data for understanding mortality trends and health conditions within the prison system. Keen highlighted the importance of monitoring prison mortality rates to uphold human rights standards and implement preventive measures to mitigate risks and save lives.

The study’s findings underscore the need for continued scrutiny and intervention to address the health and safety challenges faced by inmates within Indiana’s prisons.
