Sullivan County Deputies Identified in Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — April 12, 2024

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department deputies involved in the fatal officer-involved shooting on April 10, 2024, have been identified as Deputy Phelan (PJ) Montgomery and Deputy Hunter Givens, according to Indiana State Police.

The incident occurred at 1839 Tulip Tree Lane in Sullivan, Indiana.

Cameron Lee Atkins, 54, of Sullivan, died as a result of a gunshot wound inflicted by law enforcement officers during the afternoon of April 10. The deputies were serving a protective order at Atkins’ residence when he allegedly pointed a firearm at them, prompting the deputies to discharge their department-issued handguns.

Both Deputy Montgomery and Deputy Givens have been placed on administrative leave, a customary procedure following officer-involved shootings. Deputy Montgomery has four years of law enforcement experience, while Deputy Givens has three.

The Indiana State Police continue to investigate the incident, with no further details available at this time. Upon conclusion of their inquiry, detectives will submit a comprehensive report to the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office for review and determination of potential charges.

Under the law, all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
