Bloomington Police Investigate Shooting

On April 19, 2024, at approximately 10:55 p.m., officers responded to an apartment in the 100 block of S Curry Pike in reference to a person that had been shot. It was reported that the suspects had last been seen running from the apartment headed south. Officers arrived in the area within a few minutes of the 911 call being received and immediately began checking the area as others provided medical care to the victim. The victim, a 56-year-old Bloomington man, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds which required emergency surgery. Investigators were told by hospital personnel that the man was expected to survive, but his current condition is unknown.

At 11:01 p.m., an officer with the Bloomington Police Department observed two subjects walking along a tree line between the Highland Village Church and the Kroger parking lot. As the officer approached the two individuals, they began running and crossed over to the Kroger parking lot. A female was quickly taken into custody and a male was chased by officers on foot to the rear of the Kroger store. The male attempted to hide in a small patch of woods, but was located a few moments later and taken into custody without further incident. The female was identified as Annabella Winter (19, Bloomington) and the male was identified as Devance Gayles (35, Michigan City). Officers then began checking the area where the two had initially been seen and located a handgun wrapped in a sweatshirt in the nearby wooded area.

Winter and Gayles were transported to the Bloomington Police Department for interviews. At the conclusion of the interviews, the two were transported to the Monroe County Jail and remanded for the following charges:

Devance Anthony Gayles (DOB 02/28/1989):

  • Attempted Murder, level 1 felony
  • Burglary, level 1 felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, level 4 felony
  • Criminal Recklessness, level 5 felony
  • Pointing a Firearm, level 6 felony

Annabella Winter Jackson (DOB 01/10/2005):

  • Resisting Law Enforcement, class A misdemeanor
  • Outstanding arrest warrant (violation of probation, original charge of Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury, class A misdemeanor)

The Bloomington Police Department was assisted at the scene by members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police. This coordination resulted in the suspect’s being located within just over five minutes of the initial 911 call being received, both suspects being taken into custody within nine minutes of the call, and a firearm being located that was believed to be involved in the shooting within 45 minutes. The Bloomington Police Department thanks the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police for their assistance and rapid response.

Under Indiana law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is

presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — April 20, 2024

A person was shot late Friday night on South Curry Pike, leading to a large police response as authorities worked to secure the scene and arrest suspects.

According to scanner traffic, police responded to a weapons call in the 100 block of South Curry around 10:57 p.m. Multiple witnesses contacted local media outlet The Bloomingtonian, reporting a significant police presence on the city’s West Side.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Bloomington Police Department, and the Indiana State Police found themselves at several locations along Curry Pike, including the parking lot of the nearby Kroger on Liberty Drive and the wooded area behind the business.

Law enforcement vehicles lined Curry in front of apartment buildings and officers combed an area near the Kroger on Liberty Drive area for evidence. One individual, speaking to The Bloomingtonian, indicated that a relative had been shot. Reports suggested that a female suspect fled the scene southbound toward Third Street, with police subsequently recovering a firearm. The victim, a male, sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, according to scanner traffic.

Initial confusion emerged regarding the identity of the shooter, with authorities initially indicating a female suspect before later clarifying that a male individual was believed to have fired shots through a window. Despite the evolving nature of the situation, law enforcement swiftly located and apprehended a female suspect, initiating a foot pursuit that ended in the suspect’s arrest.

Additionally, a second individual was taken into custody by 11:05 p.m., and a firearm was recovered from the scene by 11:43 p.m. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

As this is a developing story, further updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
