Bloomington Police Investigate Fatal Shooting Incident in Parking Lot

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Bloomington Police Department is investigating a shooting that left one man dead in a parking lot in Bloomington early Tuesday, according to a press release from BPD Capt. Ryan Pedigo.

According to Capt. Pedigo, officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of S Liberty Drive around 6:20 a.m. after receiving reports of a man found lying in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers confirmed the man was deceased and appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound to his chest.

Upon arriving for work, the complainant, who discovered the man, alerted authorities. A subsequent examination of the area led officers to a van parked nearby with a bullet hole through its windshield.

Scott A. Cooper, 56, who was found sleeping inside the van, was detained and transported to the Bloomington Police Department for questioning. Investigators later located a loaded .380 caliber handgun inside the 2006 Chrysler Town & Country van where Cooper had been found.

Cooper was taken into custody following an interview with investigators and transported to the Monroe County Jail. He faces a charge of murder, according to police.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, according to the Monroe County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Authorities have not disclosed any further details about the incident.

Under Indiana law, criminal charges are considered accusations until proven guilty in a court of law.
