Ivy Tech Bloomington to Celebrate Graduates at Commencement Friday

Written from press release

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington is gearing up to honor the achievements of its graduating class of 2024 at its annual Commencement Ceremony Friday.

Scheduled for May 10 at 6 p.m., the ceremony will take place at the Indiana University Auditorium, where approximately 1,300 graduates will be celebrated for their accomplishments. Among them, a total of 1,750 associate degrees and certificates will be conferred.

This year’s Commencement holds special significance as it marks the first ceremony under the leadership of Chancellor Erik Coyne, who has been at the helm of the Bloomington campus for a full year.

Kevin Nguyen, president of the Student Government Association and a computer science graduate, will deliver the commencement address. Nguyen, graduating with summa cum laude honors, was recognized as the outstanding student in his program of study. He will share insights into his journey as an Ivy Tech student leader and his plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science at Indiana University this fall.

Reflecting on his experience, Nguyen expressed gratitude for Ivy Tech’s computer science program, which facilitated his transition to a four-year university. “That has made my life and career path a lot smoother, opening the doors to higher education for me,” he said.

Marjie Risen, program chair for education at Ivy Tech Bloomington, will also be honored during the ceremony with an Honorary Associate of College and Community Service degree for her 25 years of dedicated service as she retires from her position.

In addition to individual achievements, Ivy Tech Bloomington is celebrating several milestones by the numbers:

  • 445 transfer degrees and certificates will be awarded, representing 25% of all credentials conferred.
  • 370 Early College students will graduate, with four students earning a full associate degree before high school graduation.
  • 113 Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN/RN) degrees and 49 Practical Nursing (LPN) certificates will be awarded, marking a 22% increase in nursing graduates over last year.
  • 66 associate degrees and certificates will be conferred to 46 Achieve Your Degree™ (AYD) graduates, and 39 associate degrees and certificates will be awarded among 24 Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP) students.
  • Six military veterans and eight international students from China and Nigeria will also graduate.
