Several Crashes and Grease Spill Shut Down E State Road 46 in Monroe County Thursday

Written from press release

Monroe County, Ind. — On Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 1:07 p.m., the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple motor vehicle crashes and a significant spill on E State Road 46 and E Trailway Drive in the 6600 block.

Upon arrival, deputies shut down E SR 46 due to three separate crashes and a spill of food grease that had been tracked along the by-pass into Brown County. The roadway remained completely closed from 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., and deputies managed single-lane traffic until 7:45 p.m.

Jerry Scales of Nashville, Ind., lost control of his 2006 Nissan Frontier on the slick roadway surface and ran off the road into an embankment. Rodney Warner of Auburn, Ind., driving a 2018 Ford Taurus, stopped for Scales’ accident and was side-swiped by a 2017 Nissan Rogue driven by Vivian Stafford of Nashville, Ind., who was unable to stop due to the slick conditions.

Jamie Wilhelmus of Newburgh, Ind., in a 2021 GMC Yukon, stopped for the previous accidents and was rear-ended by a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by Adriana Urbina of Bloomington, Ind.

Minor injuries were reported at the scene. The incident is still under investigation as authorities work to identify the vehicle responsible for the leaky load.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Monroe Fire Protection District, IU Health Ambulance, and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) for roadway cleanup.
