Monroe County Commissioners to Honor Annexation Remonstration Leaders

Written from press release

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (May 30, 2024) — The Monroe County Commissioners will honor local leaders who spearheaded efforts against annexation at a recognition ceremony on June 6. The event will begin at 5 p.m. in the Monroe County Courthouse rotunda.

Commissioners Julie Thomas, Lee Jones, and Penny Githens will present certificates of appreciation to residents who organized remonstration efforts in nine different areas facing involuntary annexation. The event will acknowledge those who gathered signatures and mobilized their communities to oppose the annexations.

“These folks spent so much time and energy during the remonstration period to make sure that not only were their own voices heard, but that their neighbors’ voices were also heard,” said Julie Thomas, president of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners.

County Residents Against Annexation (CRAA) President Margaret Clements will also speak, presenting “Annexation: What We Have Accomplished and What’s Next.” The ceremony will include remarks from county officials reviewing their collaboration efforts with the City of Bloomington.

The event is open to the public.
