Indiana State Police Investigating Death of Inmate Who Killed Officer Seara Burton

Pendleton, Ind. (June 6, 2024) — Early this morning, detectives from the Indiana State Police Pendleton District were called to assist in the investigation of an inmate’s death at the Pendleton Correctional Facility. The inmate, Phillip M. Lee, had been awaiting trial for the 2022 murder of Richmond Police Officer Seara Burton.

At approximately 12:46 a.m., correctional staff found Lee unresponsive and alone in his cell. Despite immediate attempts to provide medical care, he was pronounced dead. The Madison County Coroner’s Office identified Lee and confirmed his involvement in the high-profile case.

Per protocol, the Pendleton Correctional Facility requested the assistance of the Indiana State Police to conduct a thorough investigation. While no foul play is suspected, toxicology results and an autopsy are pending.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office and the Indiana Department of Correction are also involved in the investigation. Further information will be released by the Madison County Coroner’s Office as it becomes available.
