Monroe County Public Library Southwest Branch Reopens, Summer Reading Program Began June 1st

Bloomington, IN (July 1, 2024) — The Monroe County Public Library (MCPL) proudly announced the reopening of its Southwest Branch today. With normal operating hours of 9 AM to 7 PM, patrons can now return materials and reserve meeting and study rooms once again.

This year, the library encourages adults to join in the summer reading fun alongside children and teens. Participants can complete “Project Mercury” to earn prizes and enter a grand prize drawing. The all-ages Summer Reading Program which began June 1st.

Featured Programs for All Ages

  • Family Movie Night: Lightyear
    July 8, 5:30–7 PM, Downtown Library
    Families are invited to enjoy a screening of “Lightyear” at the Downtown Library.
  • Discardia Mending Day
    July 13, 12–4 PM, Downtown Library
    Bring clean clothes or textiles in need of repair, and learn mending techniques from Discardia.
  • Family Dance with Katie Zukof and Supertrad
    July 13, 2–3 PM, Downtown Library
    Participate in traditional American dances taught by Katie Zukof with live music by Supertrad.

  • Farm Animals Meet & Greet
    July 5, 10 AM–12 PM, Downtown Library
    Children can meet baby animals from Cedar Valley Farm & Forest.
  • Kids DUPLO Masters
    July 8, 10 AM–12 PM, Downtown Library
    A building session with DUPLO sets and other stacking blocks for children ages birth to 6.
  • STEAM Club: Outer Space
    July 9, 3–4 PM, Ellettsville Branch
    Science activities focusing on outer space for ages 7–12. Registration required.
  • Tween Tech Hour
    July 12, 3–4 PM, Downtown Library
    Explore tech tools and makerspace items for ages 9–12. Registration required.

  • Fortnite Trivia
    July 1, 2:30–3:30 PM, Ellettsville Branch
    Test your Fortnite knowledge in this trivia challenge for ages 12–19.
  • Books & Boba: Book Adaptations
    July 6, 2–3 PM, Downtown Library
    Discuss book adaptations while enjoying boba drinks from Bapu Fresh. Ages 12–19.
  • RPG Club: Lost in Space
    July 9, 3–5 PM, Southwest Branch
    A space-themed role-playing game adventure for ages 12–19. Registration required.
  • RPG Guild: Stars Without Number
    July 10, 2:30–4 PM, Ellettsville Branch
    Engage in a short and fun space-themed RPG session. Ages 12–19.

Programs for Adults

  • Popsicle Social
    July 3, 5–6:30 PM, Downtown Library
    Enjoy popsicles and collage-making. Recommended for ages 18–32.
  • Adult Craft Club: Friendship Bracelets
    July 8, 5–6:30 PM, Southwest Branch
    Create friendship bracelets in a nostalgic summer camp setting. Age 18 and up. Registration required.
  • VITAL Volunteer Information Session
    July 9, 5:30–7 PM, Downtown Library
    Learn about becoming a VITAL volunteer for adult literacy and English language learning. Age 18 and up. Registration required.
  • Green Screen Video Production for Beginners
    July 11, 6–7 PM, Downtown Library
    Learn how to create videos with dynamic backgrounds. Age 16 and up. Registration required.

Library News and Resources

MCPL will be closed on July 4 for Independence Day and will resume regular hours on July 5. Patrons can access digital resources like eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies, and music online anytime.

Dine Out for the Library

Support the library by dining at Mother Bear’s Pizza on July 9, 10, 23, and 24. A donation of $5 will be made for each large pizza ordered with a flyer.

Celebrate Disability Pride Month

In honor of Disability Pride Month, MCPL highlights a curated collection of documentaries and narrative films featuring individuals living with disabilities, available on Kanopy.
