Van Buren Township Resident Seeks Community Help to Rebuild Home After Devastating Fire

Van Buren Township, Monroe County, IN (July 2, 2024) — A woman whose home on S. Valmore Avenue was extensively damaged by a fire just outside the City of Bloomington, Indiana, is reaching out to the community for assistance in raising funds for building materials, her brother, David Arthur, told the Bloomingtonian.

Arthur, who works in the construction industry, stated that he and other family members are willing to do the labor but need support to replace essential building materials. The fire, which occurred on Monday, left the house with a destroyed roof and significant structural damage.

“The roof trusses, decking, and shingles need complete replacement to protect the house from further damage,” Arthur explained. “Additionally, we need to replace doors, windows, interior framing, electrical, and drywall.”

The homeowner, who had recently paid off the house built by Habitat for Humanity, no longer had homeowners insurance after an unpaid bill led to the policy’s lapse. Despite reaching out to Habitat for Humanity and the City of Bloomington’s Housing she was referred to the Neighborhood Development (HAND), but doesn’t believe she will receive needed assistance, likely due to her residence being in the county.

The Monroe Fire Protection District provided details about the incident on their Facebook page:

“Yesterday afternoon, firefighters responded to S. Valmore Ave for a structure fire. Heavy fire and smoke were visible from a single-story home. During a search, crews rescued a dog, which was given oxygen by EMS and reunited with its owner. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no injuries have been reported.”

The fire drew responses from multiple departments, including the Ellettsville Fire Department, City of Bloomington Fire Department Engine 4, REMC, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Eastern Greene Fire Territory was also called for a water tanker but was later dismissed.

Arthur estimates the cost of materials to be at least $10,000 and is seeking donations to help cover this expense. The family has set up a GoFundMe page:

Community members interested in helping can also reach out to Arthur at [email protected].

Arthur said he needs help mostly with buying building materials, but that any assistance, whether from individuals or other members of the construction industry, would also be greatly appreciated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
