Biden Administration Backs S.4554: The Reproductive Freedom for Women Act

Written from press release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 9, 2024

The Biden Administration has announced its strong support for the Senate passage of S.4554, known as the Reproductive Freedom for Women Act, introduced by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) along with 32 cosponsors.

In a statement released today, the Biden Administration emphasized the critical importance of restoring the protections that were previously provided under Roe v. Wade. For nearly five decades, Roe v. Wade safeguarded a woman’s constitutional right to make personal health care decisions, a right that has been stripped away, leaving women vulnerable in many states.

“The loss of that right has been devastating,” the statement reads. “Today, more than 20 states have dangerous and extreme abortion bans in effect, some without exceptions for rape or incest. Women are being denied essential medical care, including during emergencies, or forced to travel thousands of miles out of state for care that would have been available if Roe were still the law of the land. Doctors and nurses are being threatened with jail time.”

The Biden Administration criticized the lack of nationwide protections for reproductive health care, pointing to what it described as an extreme agenda by Republican elected officials that endangers women’s health and lives. The statement underscores the Administration’s commitment to work with Congress to ensure reproductive freedom is defended.

“The President and Vice President stand with the vast majority of Americans who agree that reproductive health care decisions should be made by a woman with her doctor—not by politicians,” the statement concluded.
